"Österreich am Wort", a project giving web access to more than 5,000 mostly full length recordings

The aim of this project was to give a free accessible overview of the numerous audio and video collections which are stored at the Austrian Mediathek. A team evaluated the whole content and extracted examples of those recordings which represent the collections existing at the archive. Another group cleared the rights. A third team digitized more than the required amount of recordings because of the uncertain progress of the clearing processes.
Now, with the closure of this project, the amount of accessible recordings on the website “www.mediathek.at”, including the 6,000 recordings distributed since 2002, exceeds the mark of 11,000 files.
In this presentation I aim to illustrate the path followed by this time consuming work and the inventive problem-solving techniques that have led to this remarkable website.
