Successes and failures of providing access through the digital domain at Makerere University Klaus Wachsmann Music Archive

This paper emerged as a result of using an institutional repository in Makerere University that was established in 2006. It is called the Uganda Scholarly Digital Library, and is used to archive, preserve, and give access to Makerere University’s different collections, including the digital and audio-visual collections housed within the Makerere University Klaus Wachsmann Music Archive.
The institutional repository is Makerere’s digital domain for all the research works, conference proceedings, paper presentations, newspapers, theses and dissertations, photographs, music collections as well as audio-visual materials created and collected by the university.
In response to this year’s IASA theme, this paper particularly highlights the sound and audio-visual collections archived into this digital domain, the users, modes of access, and the facilities.
This paper further underscores the contribution of the Uganda Scholarly Digital Library (USDL) as a digital domain towards giving access. It therefore aims at highlighting the successes and failures of providing access of the sound and audio-visual collections in a digital domain. Recommendations and the way forward are highlighted as well.
