Talking to Former Tape Manufacturers
In cooperation with the ILKAR Project of the Berlin Phonogrammarchiv, I arranged two interviews with experts formerly involved at AGFA and BASF in tape development, customer service, recovery of sticky tapes, and chemical experts of the ILKAR project.
These interviews focussed on reasons for the so-called “Sticky Shed Syndrome” (SSS) and possible treatment to get tapes in playable condition. The outcome was a multi-parametrical picture of various reasons for SSS, most, but not all curable, in which not only chemical formulation, but also production technology and mechanical integrity of the surface of magnetic layers play a significant role for tape stability.
